With its blue flag beaches and one of the most beautiful naturally formed harbours, Dorset is the obvious choice for water sports and if you are looking for a variety of accommodation to choose from then Poole hotels will not be a disappointment. There are a variety of different types of accommodation available to suit all budgets and tastes. These range from budget through to 5-star hotels, depending upon your requirements.
It is believed that Poole was founded in the Middle Ages, although there are no written records of any large settlements, only a few huts. By the late 12th Century however merchants from the nearby town of Wareham settled there after their own settlement was burned during the Civil War and by the early 13th Century Poole had began to flourish.
There are plenty of hotels just a short walk away from the centre of Poole and some are just a little further out, but many offer the usual facilities. Some of the hotels have their own restaurants on site and as you would expect from a coastal venue, the seafood menu is vast. The bigger hotels have lavish reception areas and most offer en-suite facilities as well as tea and coffee making facilities in the rooms. Some of the larger hotels have additional facilities such as gymnasium and saunas.
Some of the Poole hotels actually overlook the harbour and many others have rooms with a coastal view. There is no minimum stay; you can book for one night if necessary. One or two of the larger hotels have their own nightclubs and if dancing is your passion then these are worth a try.
If water sports are your particular passion then the best place is Poole Harbour, which has designated areas for windsurfing, scuba diving, kayaking and surfing as well as wakeboarding. There are also other water sports such as jet skiing and water biking, but there are speed restrictions in place of 10 knots and the activities are designated to a specific area. This area is the northern end of Brownsea Island. You will need a permit to use this area and your craft and this can be obtained from the Harbour Master.
Other activities of interest when visiting Poole would be the Dolphin Shopping Centre where you can find some of the bigger retail stores. There is also a marina which is home to some of the most spectacular yachts and also has a restaurant and shops. Poole is also home to the newly refurbishment Lighthouse Arts Centre where there are a variety of activities daily including theatre shows and dance shows.
>From the harbour you can arrange for a charter boat to take you out sea fishing. These are usually early morning and last either a full or half day. Some boats will allow you to charter for up to eight people on one trip, as well as catering for the individual.
Poole has its own museum and gardens, where you can learn about the history of Poole and its harbour. It is spread out over four floors covering social history and archaeology. It has recently been extended to now include a terrace which overlooks the harbour.
For the children, particularly if it's a rainy day, there is Ollies Playland. Poole's very own indoor soft play area. There is also a café inside where you can sit whilst your children play.
Open all year round and worth a visit if you are staying in one of the Poole hotels is the Poole Pottery Studio on the Quay. Not only is it set in beautiful surrounds but you will be able to watch the master potter at work creating pottery that is unique. There is also an opportunity to create your own pottery on site and take it home.
There are a variety of restaurants in Poole. You can find Asian, Mediterranean, French, British and extensive seafood cuisine. The bulk of seafood restaurants, but not all, can be found around the harbour and in the Quay. There are also plenty of cafes where you can get a snack and drink if you do not want a full meal.
Upton House and Gardens is a National Trust venue offering you the opportunity to experience life as it was in the 1930's. There are also various activities held on a daily basis such as Jazz Concerts or an introductory film.
